SELECTED COUGARS TRAVEL FOR LAST CHANCE MEETS: It is last chance week for some members of the Washington State University indoor track and field teams...several Cougs will be competing at the NCAA Last Chance meet in Seattle at UW's Dempsey Indoor Facility Mar. 7...Jeshua Anderson (400m dash), Robert Williams (60m hurdles) and the men's 4x400m relay squad of Barry Leavitt, Reny Follett, Justin Woods and Anderson, will compete at the Cyclone National Qualifying Meet in the Iowa State Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa, Sat., Mar. 7...WSU's women's distance medley relay of Lisa Egami, Lorraine King, Anna Layman and Sara Trané will compete at the Alex Wilson Invite Mar. 6 and King will run in the 400m dash Mar. 7, at the Loftus Sports Center on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Ind....four Cougar women hammer throwers will start the outdoor season Fri., Mar. 6, at the SFCC Sasquatch Mini Meet in Spokane.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 36th season with the Cougar track program; 15th year as a head coach, 14th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...former decathlete Rickey Moody joins Megan Johnson and Kyle Chandler as volunteer coaches.

WSU'S KING IS QUEEN AT MPSF: Women's team captain Lorraine King (Fontana, Calif.) won the 60m hurdles at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships with a lifetime-best time of 8.46 seconds, just missing the NCAA PQ time of 8.43, fifth-best in school history and eclipsed her previous PR time of 8.53 which was fourth-best heading into the MPSF Championships...King also took fourth place in the 400m dash with a PR time of 54.95 (previous PR was 55.08, set earlier this season)...also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay that finished fourth in a season-best time of 3:41.59.
COUGAR MEN SECOND AT MPSF CHAMPIONSHIPS: The WSU men's team finished tied with Cal for second place at the MPSF Indoor with 78.5 points, behind UCLA's 83.5...highest MPSF finish for WSU men since 2002 (2nd place)...Cougar women's team finished eighth with 51.5 points as the Stanford women won with 115 points...Washington State athletes reached lifetime-best marks 37 times in the two-day meet in Seattle.

HOW HIGH CAN THEY GO??? Trent Arrivey, junior from Woodinville, Wash., soared to a personal-best and improved NCAA Provisional Qualifying high jump height of 7-3 (2.21m) for second place at the MPSF Indoor Championships Feb. 28 in Seattle...Arrivey, a 2008 All-American, has the second-best height nationally this season.
THREE COUGS OVER 7-FEET IN THE MEN'S HIGH JUMP THIS SEASON: Shawn Swartz, a freshman from Port Coquitlam, B.C., Canada, became the 30th Cougar man to clear 7-feet in the high jump with his PR leap of 7-0 1/2 (2.15m) at the Husky Classic in Seattle Feb. 14...Swartz joins Ryan Deese (soph., Colorado Springs, Colo.) who cleared 7-0 1/4 (2.14m) Feb. 7, at the Runners Soul Open in Moscow, Idaho, and All-American Trent Arrivey (junior, Woodinville, Wash.) who soared over a 7-2 1/2 (2.20m) bar, Jan. 31 at the Cougar Indoor but improved his PR to 7-3 (2.21m) Feb. 28...freshman Ross VanZanten (Longview, Wash.) cleared 6-8 (2.03m) in his collegiate debut last weekend and is aiming to make this a Cougar fearsome foursome.
HIGH JUMP HISTORY: Having three competitors clear 7-feet in the high jump is special, it is not take the prize for WSU competitors...FOUR Cougars high jumpers clear 7-feet in the SAME MEET...Brent Harken, James Cunningham, Brent Lowery and Anastasios Djonis all cleared 7-1 at the Vandal Invitational Meet, Feb. 3, 1984, in Moscow, Idaho...Harken won the competition after skying to 7-3 1/2...according to the 1985 WSU Track & Field media guide and confirmed by Track & Field News, this is the only time in collegiate history four men from the same school have cleared over 7-0 in the same meet.EGAMI BREAKS OWN MILE RECORD: Lisa Egami (junior, Coquitlam, B.C.) ran the school record time in the mile at the Husky Classic meet and was so happy to return to the Dempsey Indoor track for the MPSF race that she dropped her time again Feb. 28...Egami's time of 4:44.92 is an improved NCAA Provisional Qualifying time.
TRANÉ ADDS RECORD: Sara Trané (Pixbo, Sweden), the two-time Pac-10 steeplechase champion and holder of the WSU women's steeple record, added the 3000m school record to her resume with a time of 9:28.54 at the MPSF Championships...freshman Michelly Foley (Prineville, Ore.) ran a WSU freshman school record time of 9:56.80 at the same race.
MacARTHUR HEAVES 35-POUNDS: Phil MacArthur, a senior from Ione, Wash., improved his NCAA PQ mark when he won the 35-pound weight throw at the Vandal Collegiate meet Feb. 21, with a toss of 65-feet, 11 inches (20.09m), an improvement of nearly two feet from his throw two weeks ago...this mark is fifth-best in WSU all-time records and third-best in the MPSF this season...he is looking for another improvement of several feet to advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend.
HIGHER HURDLES, LOWER TIMES: Robert Williams, a senior from Riverside, Calif., won the 60m hurdles at the Vandal Collegiate Meet Feb. 21, by edging out Idaho's Paul Dittmer at the finish line...both finished in a time of 7.84 seconds, a PR and improved NCAA PQ time for Williams...this is tied for seventh-best in WSU men's history...Williams' time is third-best in the MPSF this season with Jeshua Anderson's time of 8.00 sixth.
NATIONAL POLLS: The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2009 Week #6 poll lists Oregon as the top men's team and Texas A&M as the top women's team in a prediction of team finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships...Cougar men are 34th...individual events where WSU men are nationally listed are: Trent Arrivey, high jump (2nd), Shawn Swartz, high jump (23rd), Robert Williams, 60m hurdles (15th), Ryan Deese, high jump (28th), Philip MacArthur (27th), Jeshua Anderson, 400m dash (16th), 4x400m relay of Barry Leavitt, Reny Follett, Justin Woods, Anderson (10th)....Kendall Mays, pole vault, is the sole WSU woman nationally ranked (18th).
ANDERSON MAKES TRACKSHARK TOP 12 SPRINTERS/HURDLERS TO WATCH IN 2009 LIST: WSU sophomore Jeshua Anderson was named to the TrackShark.com Top 12 Sprinters/Hurdlers to watch in 2009...Anderson won the men's 400m hurdles at the Pac-10 Conference, NCAA, USA Junior and World Junior Championship meets in 2008.
