Renee Welty has had a long journey to get to where she is today. The senior catcher from Mesquite High School in Gilbert started her college career at Chandler-Gilbert Community College where she played for two years before coming to ASU.
Renee didn’t see much action in her first year as a Sun Devil because she was catching behind then senior Kristen Miller. This year however, she is one of the primary catchers and is having a huge impact on the season.
In an interview, Renee explains everything from what keeps her motivated to why she drinks a Mountain Dew before every game.
Now that you are a grizzly veteran, what would you say is the biggest difference between being a senior and a freshman?
When you are a freshman you come in and you don’t really know what to expect, and you’re really scared. Senior year you know what to expect and you know the flow of things.
Since you transferred to ASU in your junior year how does your second year compare to your first?
Last year I came in as a newbie, but I was junior so that was weird. This year is a lot less stressful but in the same sense more stressful because as a senior I am expected to be a leader.
Did you ever think you would be one of the primary catchers at a program like ASU after starting your career at the junior college level?
It is something that I have always strived for, so it is a big relief to know that I have achieved that goal.
As a very experienced softball player, what would you say have been your keys to success to get you where you are today?
My passion for the game and love of the game is something that has always kept me going. Another thing is staying healthy. I have been fortunate enough to not have any injuries.
After winning a National Title, what keeps you and the rest of the team motivated to continue to get better each and every day?
Just knowing that there is always a big target on our back, and that everybody wants to beat the defending National Champions. Our number one goal is still to get to the World Series and win it all.
Finally on a less serious note, what started your Mountain Dew ritual?
I like Mountain Dew a lot. It started two years ago when I was at junior college I would drink a Mountain Dew before every game. I would never drink an energy drink before a game because it makes me too jittery, but Mountain Dew just gives me the right amount of jolt of energy.
