March 5, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- STANFORD senior Jason Dunford and USC senior Rebecca Soni have been named Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month for February, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Dunford, a senior captain, helped Stanford complete a perfect regular season with its victory over rival California. Against the Bears, Dunford won the 50 free with a time of 19.65, the only swimmer touching in at under 20 seconds. He was also a part of the winning 400 medley relay team (3:10.87) which defeated Cal by almost two seconds. On Feb. 7, Dunford led the Cardinal to the win over USC on senior day. He captured a pair of wins in the 100 free (44.16) and the 100 fly (47.65). The Nairobi, Kenya, native was also a part of the winning 400 medley (3:13.95) and 200 free (1:19.79) relay teams that both set NCAA `B' standard times.
This is the second monthly honor for Dunford and the sixth Men's Swimmer of the Month overall for Stanford.
Soni put on a spectacular performance at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash. The Plainsboro, N.J., native won titles in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, and helped the 400 medley relay team to victory with a time of 3:31.75. Soni set a NCAA record in the 100 breast with a time of 58.10. Her time of 2:04.75 in the 200 breast registered a new American record, almost a second faster than the previous record of 2:05.73 set by Stanford standout Tara Kirk at the U.S. Open in March of 2006. For her efforts, Soni earned the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Meet honors.
This marks the fourth monthly honor for Soni, the most ever by a Pac-10 women's swimmer, and the fifth Women's Swimmer of the month all-time for USC.
