THIS WEEK — Oregon State women’s track opens the 2009 outdoor season in McMinnville, Ore. at the Linfield Erik Anderson Icebreaker this Saturday, March 7. The event begins at 9 a.m. at Maxwell Field.

“We are using this first outdoor meet to ‘break the ice’ so to say, at the Icebreaker. This will be a good way to get started and keep us moving toward getting healthier.  At this point we aren’t as fit overall as we were this time a year ago. We’ve had a number of aches and pains that have lasted longer than we hoped. We just have to stay patient, take a little different approach use this to keep building toward April and May.”

As many as 17 runners will participate in the McMinnville meet. Half will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with the remaining runners taking to the 1,500-meters.

Making their debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday will be: sophomore Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson, sophomore Kambria Schumacher, freshman Cassandra Schumacher, freshman Melissa Kauffman, and tentatively sophomore Jennifer Macias.

Running in the 1,500-meters will be: seniors Rebecca Mishler, Jenny O’Connor and Holly Thomson, juniors Krista Stangel and Lorene Young, sophomores Jackie Brown, Abby Chesimet and Marsha Lampi, Hayley Oveson, as well as freshman Lorine Cruz.

While the team is running at the Icebreaker, sophomore Casey Masterson will be pursuing an NCAA qualifying time in the mile at the University of Washington’s Last Chance indoor meet in Seattle, Wash. Three weeks ago Masterson won her section in the mile at the Husky Classic with a time of 4:51 at Dempsey Indoor, just three seconds off the qualifying mark of 4:48.

The NCAA provisional qualifying time is 4:48, and Casey [Masterson] ran 4:51 in her first and only indoor mile ever and she won that race. We decided to send her back up there and give her an opportunity to run quicker, and maybe get an NCAA qualifying time.

UW LAST CHANCE: Saturday (March 7): Sophomore Casey Masterson will make a push qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships by reaching the mark of 4:48 in the mile.

LINFIELD ICEBREAKER: Saturday (March 7): More than 30 college and club teams will be participating this weekend as well as a number of individual and unattached participants. Oregon State will run athletes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 1,500-meters.

TOP 10s — The past few seasons have been nothing short of amazing for Oregon State runners when it comes to breaking into the school’s all-time top 10 lists (22 spots in seven events). This season is starting out the same with three runners breaking into the all-time indoor top 10 lists.

LAST TIME OUT — On Valentine’s Day the Beavers had four runners compete at the Husky Indoor Classic in Seattle, Wash. Sophomore Casey Masterson broke the school record in the indoor mile, sophomore Abby Chesimet ran the second fastest indoor 3,000-meters time in school history and junior Jackie Brown moved into sixth place all-time in the 800-meters.

HEAD COACH Kelly SullivanFifth-year head coach Kelly Sullivan has been in charge of rebuilding the cross country and track programs after a 16-year vacancy.

Sullivan has produced 88 Academic All Pac-10 honorees and has had an Academic All-American team every year since the program’s return.
