#5 Baseball Takes Out Holy Cross 12-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - Andy Workman drove in four runs to lead the No. 5 Arizona State University to a 12-1 victory over Holy Cross on Friday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. A crowd of 3,160 fans saw the Sun Devils improve to 10-1 on the season with the win.
With usual right fielder Matt Newman starting on the mound, Workman got his first start of the season and had two singles and a double to lead the Sun Devil offense. Jason Kipnis and Jordan Swagerty each had home runs, and Kipnis and Zach Wilson had two RBI apiece in the win.
Newman went six innings and allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out eight to pick up his first win of the season. Jake Borup and Jeeter Ishida combined to pitch three shutout innings out of the bullpen to finish off the game.
The Sun Devils got solo home runs in each of the first two innings by Kipnis and Swagerty respectively, and then broke the game open with four runs in the third. Wilson drove in a run with a bloop double to left, Carlos Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly, Kole Calhoun had an RBI double and Workman brought home a run with a single to make it 6-0.
Holy Cross scored its only run in the fourth, but the Devils answered with a run in the fifth on an RBI double to center by Workman. ASU added four more in the sixth and another in the seventh to cap off the 12-1 victory.
The Sun Devils complete their three-game series with Holy Cross on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for noon at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
