Arizona Outlasts Washington State, 6-1

Tuscan, Ariz. - Bianca Selaru's come from behind three-set victory was not enough as the Cougars fell to the Arizona Wildcats Friday, 6-1, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
Washington State came out strong in doubles play, but was unable to earn a victory as the Wildcats swept the doubles matches earning the opening point.
At the No. 1 slot, the WSU tandem of Ekaterina Kamendova and Elisabeth Fournier found themselves in a battle as they took on Arizona's Natasha Marks and Claire Rietsch. The Wildcats pairing earned the victory, downing the Cougars, 8-2. At the No. 3 position, Aleksandra Cekic and Ioana Oprea pushed teammates Ariane Masschelein and Jane Huh to the max before suffering a devastating, 9-7, loss.
In singles action, Bianca Selaru earned the lone victory for Washington State in impressive fashion. Selaru met Huh at the No. 6 slot, where Huh grabbed the first-set victory, 6-2. The second-set and third-set belonged to Selaru as she downed Huh, 7-5, in the second and, 10-4, in the third-set to earn the victory.
Marina Nicolas faced off with Rietsch in a three-set marathon at No. 5. Nicolas captured the first-set easily. Both players battled in the second-set trading points before Rietsch squeaked by with a victory. It all came down to the third-set where the two opponents continued to play tough. Rietsch was able to outlast Nicolas in the third-set earning the match victory, 1-6, 7-5, 14-12.
Kamendova took on Danielle Steinberg at the No. 1 position. Kamendova suffered a tough loss when she was defeated by Steinberg, 6-4, 6-0.
Playing at the No. 2 slot, senior Cekic battled No. 124 Natasha Marks. Cekic fell behind early and was unable to recover as she was defeated, 6-0, 6-2.
The Cougars will return to the court Saturday March 7, against No.16 Arizona at noon.
