Arizona tops Denver on Senior Night
March 6, 2009
Trailing after two events, the Arizona gymnastics team came back to defeat Denver 195.350-195.025 Friday night in McKale for its fifth straight meet win.
The Wildcats had balanced scores across all four events and had their fourth highest team score of the year.
'I'm happy with the win, but we could have been in the mid 196's,' said Arizona head coach Bill Ryden. 'We didn't give it away and the girls competed hard.'
Heading into the third rotation, the Wildcats were trailing by .075 points, but because of a couple deductions and falls by Denver, Arizona took a .550 lead into the last rotation and never gave up the lead.
Senior Briana Bergeson led Arizona on beam with a team-high 9.825 to lead the Wildcats to a 48.8 compared to Denver's 48.825. Sophomore Colleen Fisher also posted a 9.8 to help Arizona. Bergeson and Denver's Nikki Brown tied for the event title.
On the floor, the Wildcats had a couple falls, but managed a 48.600 compared to the Pioneers' 48.175. Arizona had four gymnast score a 9.8 or higher led by senior Bree Workman's 9.875, which tied Denver's Jessica Lopez for the meet title.
The Wildcats started on vault, scoring a 48.975 behind freshman Deanna Graham's career-high tying 9.9, which also tied the team's highest score on the vault this season. Workman also put up a solid 9.875 on the vault. Denver scored a 48.975 as a team on the vault. Graham tied with Denver's Jessica Lopez for the vault meet title.
Arizona again approached the 49-mark, but couldn't break it. The Wildcats posted a 48.975 compared to Denver's 49.050. Junior Sarah Tomczyk led the way, tying a career-high with a 9.85 and senior Alexis Greene added a 9.85 as well. Two other Wildcats, Bergeson and freshman Rebecca Cardenas each posted a 9.8 or better with a 9.825 and 9.8 respectively. UD's Lopez also won the bars.
Denver's Lopez won the meets all-around with a 39.45. None of the Arizona gymnasts competed in all four events.
The meet was part of the team's annual Senior Night, which was the last home meet for Erica Anderson, Workman, Greene and Bergeson. The Wildcats held a special ceremony for the four seniors following the meet.
'I was happy that the seniors could go out on a positive note,' Ryden said.
Arizona heads out on the road for its last regular season meet when it goes to Maryland to face Yale, Penn State and Maryland on Saturday, March 14th at 4:00 p.m.
