Bears Scratch Out 3-0 Win over Providence
March 7, 2009
FRESNO - The ninth-ranked Golden Bears started the second day of the Bayer CropScience Classic (hosted by Fresno State) with a 3-0 win over Providence on Saturday. Cal (16-3) faces BYU later this afternoon.
Marissa Drewrey was stellar in the circle for Cal allowing just two hits, with three walks and five strikeouts for her 10th win of the season. It was also her fifth shutout of the 2009 campaign.
Jamia Reid was aggressive all afternoon against the Friars, registering four steals, giving her 22 for the season - six shy of tying the school single season mark of 28 set by Erika Racklin last season. As a team, Cal recorded six steals to bring its season total to 75 - already sixth-best for a season in program history.
Reid added two hits and two runs as well.
Cal added its second run of the afternoon in the top of the third when Gina Leomiti laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Reid (single, steal and advanced to third on an error).
Providence went three up and three down in the fourth and fifth innings before getting its second hit of the game in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, with the bases loaded for Cal, Bernice Masaniai drew a walk allowing Reid to cross home plate, putting the Bears up 3-0.
Drewrey shut the door on Providence in the bottom of the seventh, inducing three groundouts to end the game.
Cal has shutout six opponents this season.
