The No. 7-ranked California women's tennis team (8-2, 2-0 Pac-10) found itself on the short end of a 4-3 match with No. 13 Stanford (9-2, 2-0 Pac-10) today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The victory gave the Cardinal its 142nd consecutive victory at home dating back to a loss to the Golden Bears in 1999. Even in defeat, Cal was able to claim several key victories on the individual singles and doubles courts in a match that will not count towards the Pac-10 standings.

The Bears maintained control of the match for most of the afternoon after they came out and claimed the doubles point for the seventh time this season. On the top court, the No. 13-ranked doubles team of sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova tipped the scales in Cal's favor when they pulled out a 7-3 tiebreaker victory against No. 23 Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette. Earlier at No. 2 doubles, senior tandem of Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas got the Bears on the right track with their fourth victory together in an 8-5 win over Carolyn McVeigh and Jessica Nguyen.

With the momentum heading into singles play, No. 23 Bobusic pushed the Bears to a 2-0 lead when she claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over McVeigh on court four but Stanford answered back with a win at No. 6 singles as Courtney Clayton defeated freshman Stephany Chang, 6-4, 6-1. No. 74-ranked Andersson gave Cal a boost next as she prevailed over No. 121 Burdette at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 win.

With the even singles courts completed, the Cardinal needed to close things out with wins on the odd courts but the Bears didn't go without a fight. After falling in each of the first sets, Cal got second-set wins on all three courts to set up decisive third sets across the board. Senior Marion Ravelojaona's bid for the Cal victory came up short first as Veronica Li regained her step to come away with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win on court five.

In the day's most intriguing singles match, No. 26 Juricova fought back to even things with No. 16-ranked Barte on the top court as each owned a 6-4 set heading into the third. The third set ended in the same score as each held serve much of the way until Barte broke to come away with the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win. With the match tied at three points and all eyes on court three, No. 42 Ilcinkas came up just short in one of the toughest battles of the match. Nguyen won her first set over Ilcinkas, 6-4 but surrendered a 6-3 second set to her Cal opponent before the two came to a five-all tie in the third. Nguyen held strong as Ilcinkas faltered to award the victory to Stanford, 4-3.

The Bears look to bounce back and get ready for No. 5 Baylor next. The Baylor Bears come to town for a 10 a.m. match on Tuesday (March 10) at Hellman Tennis Complex.
