Oregon State Varsity 4+ Races to Victory in British Columbia
March 7, 2009
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Oregon State men’s rowing team began its 2009 spring campaign on the cold waters of Elk Lake in British Columbia as the Beavers took on the University of Victoria on Saturday, March 7.
The Varsity 4+ was the most successful Beaver crew of the day, notching a convincing 11.6 second victory over Victoria. Also taking part in the race was the Oregon State Freshman 4+ crew, which finished third in the rookies’ first taste of collegiate rowing. All of the crews faced temperatures around 40 degrees, as well as strong headwinds throughout the day of racing.
The Beavers Varsity 8+ crew had a slow start to its race against two of the elite Canadian rowing programs, allowing the Victoria boat to establish a lead over the first 1,000 meters. Oregon State was able to separate early from the British Columbia crew, and set about closing the gap separating them from the Vikes. But despite a strong final 500 meters which saw the Beavers close the gap substantially, OSU finished a mere 3.8 seconds behind the Victoria crew.
“The Varsity 8+ rowed an okay race for their first time out this season,” said head coach Steve Todd. “They definitely know what they need to work on in their next races. Now we need to get back and prepare over these next two weeks to face Gonzaga.'
Also participating in their first collegiate action was the Beavers Freshman 8+. Their task was not made any easier as they faced off against a more experienced Junior Varsity crew from Victoria. Oregon State was able to stay even through the first half of the race, but the rough conditions slowed the Beavers in the third 500 meter portion allowing the Vikes to pull away and eventually come up with the 10-second victory.
After gaining valuable racing experience, the Beavers will return to Corvallis for a two week period to prepare for a dual race against Gonzaga on March 22. Check back with osubeavers.com for all of your Beaver rowing news.
