Fresno State Rallies for Seventh Inning Win
March 8, 2009
FRESNO - With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Fresno State's Mallory Perkins connected on a game-winning RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 victory over the ninth-ranked Golden Bears on Sunday in the final day of the Bayer CropScience Classic.
Cal (17-4) travels to Hawaii for Cheveron Spring Fling Tournament featuring Hawai`i, Wisconsin, St. John's, Radford, Memphis and Utah, Mar. 11-14.
Jamia Reid went 2-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases, giving her 24 for the season - four shy of tying the school single-season record of 28. Reid was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Cal kept Fresno's bats silent early and tacked on another run in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Reid produced an infield single and stole second, before advancing to third on a strikeout. Sanoe Kekahuna then placed a sacrifice bunt allowing Reid to score her 20th run of the season.
The Bulldogs woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning and finally got to Marissa Drewrey when Brooke Phipps notched an RBI single, trimming the deficit in half.
The Bears had an opportunity in the top of the sixth to add a run after Kekahuna led off the inning with a double, but could not bring her home, eventually stranding her on third.
In the bottom of the seventh, Drewrey walked the first two batters and was relieved by Valerie Arioto. Arioto then induced a pop up, and after a wild pitch recorded a strikeout. With Lisa Marie Coronado on third, Arioto was then called for an illegal pitch, allowing Coronado to score and tie the game at 2-2. Perkins then delivered the game-winning single, snapping Cal's six-game win streak.
This is the third straight game against Fresno State when the score was decided by one run.
