Kerr, Offense Dominate in Win Over Syracuse

LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Sophomore Donna Kerr tossed 4 2/3 perfect innings, settling for a one-hitter, while the Bruin offense pounded out 11 runs and 11 hits, as #3 UCLA defeated Syracuse 11-0 in five innings on Saturday at the Long Beach State Invitational.
The Bruins win their 17th in a row in improving to 22-2 on the year, while the Orange fall to 10-6.
Kerr retired the first 14 batters she faced before Jorden Rosen hit a comebacker off the UCLA hurler's glove into the 5-6 hole for an infield single. The sophomore moved to 12-2 on the season, striking out seven.
UCLA sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring six times. Senior Amanda Kamekona and sophomore Katie Schroeder both walked to lead off the game and DiSalvatore singled up the middle to plate Kamekona to make it 1-0. With Schroeder now at third after the single, DiSalvatore took off for second and stole it, and when catcher Amy Kelley's throw went into center field, Schroeder scored and DiSalvatore moved to third. Shull followed with a single up the middle to plate DiSalvatore to make it 3-0.
Two outs later, freshman Dani Yudin was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Sophomore Amy Crawford then drove in her first collegiate run, singling up the middle to plate Shull and put the Bruins on top 4-0. Sophomore Monica Harrison singled up the middle to load the bases and Kamekona followed with a single to left to bring in Yudin to up the lead to 5-0. Schroeder then drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Crawford and give the Bruins a 6-0 advantage.
The Bruins tacked on another run in the third. Crawford walked on four pitches to begin the inning and stole second. After she moved to third on a groundout, Kamekona lifted a scoring fly ball to deep right to bring in Crawford and make it 7-0.
UCLA scored its eighth run in the fourth. DiSalvatore reached on a fielding error by second baseman Stephanie Watts and was pinch-run for by sophomore Grace Murray. Following a walk to Shull and a wild pitch to move both runners into scoring position, Andrea Harrison singled up the middle to bring in Murray and make it 8-0.
The Bruins added three more runs in the fifth. With one out, Schroeder singled to left and came around to score on a double to center by DiSalvatore to put UCLA up 9-0. Shull then singled to right to plate DiSalvatore and scored on a double to left-center by Andrea Harrison to make it 11-0.
Jenna Caira pitched four innings for Syracuse, allowing eight runs (seven earned), seven hits and six walks with two strikeouts. Angie Sagnelli tossed one inning, giving up three runs and four hits with one strikeout.
The Bruins play twice on Sunday, facing Longwood at 9 a.m. and Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. Gametracker will be available for both contests at UCLABruins.com.
