Salas Leads USC In UCF Challenge First Round

Sophomore Lizette Salas fired a 1-under 71 to lead a steady No. 3 USC women's golf team in the first round of the 2009 UCF Challenge at the RedTail G.C. in Sorrento, Calif., on Sunday (March 8).
The defending NCAA champion Trojans, who have finished no lower than sixth in 19 consecutive tournaments, finds itself tied for seventh at 3-over 291, though well within striking distance of first, only nine strokes out.
UCLA leads at 6-under 282 and is followed by Arizona State (284), Oklahoma State (286), LSU (286), Tennessee (290), Auburn (290) and USC and Texas (both at 291).
Salas, who has finished in the top 10 in all five previous starts this season, is tied for 12th after the first round. She had three birdies on the day, including a 2-under back 9. She is five shots off the lead and among 22 players who were 1-under or better Sunday.
Freshmen Jennifer Song and Inah Park are tied for 32nd after both carded 1-over 73s. Song, who has four top 10 finishes this year, shook off a 3-over front 9 with a 2-under back 9. Park played solidly throughout the round, carding all pars save for a bogey on 17.
Junior Belen Mozo and Caroline Kim are tied for 40th at 2-over 74. Mozo had three bogeys against a birdie while Kim had three birdies to help offset a couple double bogeys and one bogey. Senior Victoria Alimonda, playing as an individual, is tied for 93rd at 11-over 83.
Play continues Monday with tee times between 9-11 a.m. ET Monday and between 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
