Stanford Edges UC Davis To Complete Fourth Consecutive Weekend Sweep
March 8, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team eked out a 1-0 win today at Smith Family Stadium, topping UC Davis for its 23rd straight win. The Cardinal (24-1) has not lost since the opening day of the season and has now swept through four consecutive tournaments.
Stanford put runners on in three of the first four innings and, despite getting three in scoring position, couldn't get one across. In the same span, UC Davis put three runners on and stranded Jessica Gonzalez on third base.
The Cardinal finally capitalized on an opportunity in the fifth inning. Freshman Sarah Hassman recorded an infield single to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a ground ball. With two out and Hassman on second, Shannon Koplitz stepped up with the game-winning hit, knocking a single to right center field.
Senior Missy Penna collected the win in the circle and improved to 15-1, tallying five strikeouts on the day. Penna has now shut out 41 opponents in her career and posted 99 wins.
Alex Holmes took the loss for UC Davis after giving up the game's lone run in the fifth inning.
Stanford now breaks for final exams and will be back in action on Mar. 20 against Princeton as part of the Stanford Invitational.
