Tulane Takes Series With 6-4 Win Over USC
March 8, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - Seth Henry went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI Sunday while Nick Pepitone threw three scoreless innings in relief as the Tulane Green Wave defeated the USC Trojans, 6-4, to win the nonconference series. Steve Moritz added a 4-for-5 day at the plate for the Green Wave.
Keith Castillo (Huntington Beach/Mater Dei HS) went 2-for-4 for the Trojans with a home run and three RBI.
Pepitone allowed just one hit and struck out six for his second save. Josh Zeid (3-0) picked up the win with 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits.
Tulane (9-5) never trailed, but stranded 12 runners in the game and left the bases loaded three times. Sam Honeck hit a two-run double in the third as part of a three-run inning off USC freshman starter Danny Coulombe, who lasted just 2 2/3 innings and walked five.
USC came back with a run in the fourth on Castillo's solo home run. In the top of the fifth, Joe De Pinto hit a fly ball to center that Tulane center fielder Nick Boullosa lost in the sun. The ball then hit Boullosa and rolled away to allow De Pinto to score as he was credited with an inside-the-park home run.
Drew Allain made it a 4-2 Tulane lead with an RBI double in the fifth. Henry led off the sixth with his fourth home run of the season, hitting a solo shot to right center. The Trojans (4-6) rallied again in the seventh after Hector Rabago led off with a single and Grant Green was hit by a pitch. Anthony Vasquez hit a ground ball that moved both runners and Castillo came through with a two-run single to left. Pepitone then struck out Brandon Garcia for the final out.
Tulane added a run in the seventh and Pepitone struck out the side in the ninth to close out the victory.
USC travels home for the start of a 13-game homestand, beginning on Tuesday (March 10) against UC Irvine at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com through a video webcast, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
