UCLA Baseball Falls to No. 16 Oklahoma, 6-4, in Series Finale

NORMAN, Okla. - The UCLA baseball team lost the series finale at No. 16 Oklahoma, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon before 1,005 fans at the Sooners' L. Dale Mitchell Park. Second baseman Eddie Murray led the Bruins with a 3-for-4 effort, recording one double, one RBI and one run.
The Sooners (12-3) were led by third baseman Garrett Buechele, who went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double, and center fielder Jamie Johnson, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Oklahoma right-hander Garrett Richards (1-0) earned his first victory of the season, limiting the Bruins (2-10) to three runs and seven hits in seven innings. Richards logged seven strikeouts and issued just one walk. Right-hander Ryan Duke allowed one hit in the ninth inning before recording his third save in as many days.
UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) and nine hits in three innings. Cole logged three strikeouts and issued one walk. Left-hander Gavin Brooks tossed five hitless innings in relief, recording five strikeouts and two walks.
Oklahoma scored two runs in each of the first three innings. In the bottom of the first, third baseman Garrett Buechele lined a two-out double over the reach of right fielder Gabe Cohen, allowing two runners to score. In the second, Oklahoma plated two runs with consecutive singles with the bases loaded. The following frame, the Sooners scored two runs (both unearned) on two singles, one error and one sacrifice fly.
UCLA got on the board with one run in the top of the third. With two outs, second baseman Eddie Murray lined a two-out double to right field, scoring center fielder Blair Dunlap from first base. In the top of the sixth, Murray raced home from third base on an infield groundout by Cohen, cutting Oklahoma's advantage to 6-2.
The Bruins reduced their deficit to 6-3 in the seventh when Uribe led off the frame with a solo homer to left. UCLA added their fourth run in the top of the eighth.
UCLA returns to action against UC Santa Barbara at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 10. Game time is 6 p.m. Tickets for adults and children cost two dollars as part of the Bruins' ongoing 'Two-Dollar Tuesday' promotion.
Game Notes: Eddie Murray recorded his third multiple-hit game of the year (second three-hit effort) and has raised his batting average to a .382 mark...left-hander Gavin Brooks retired the first eight batters he faced in relief...Casey Haerther finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and has hit safely in 10 of the Bruins' 12 games...Blair Dunlap extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double in the top of the eighth inning.
