Huskies Lead After First Day At Fresno
March 9, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. -- After a slow first round Monday morning, the Huskies are back on track and tied for first place at the Fresno State Lexus Classic at Belmont Country Club.
Behind strong rounds from juniors Nick Taylor and Richard Lee, the Huskies shot a collective 584 over two rounds on Monday to end the day in a two-way tie with UC Davis for the tournament lead. The Dawgs made up for an 11-over first round with the tournament's only below-par round (285).
'We played really well in the second round,' said Huskies head coach Matt Thurmond. 'We didn't really play well today overall, but the important thing is that these guys didn't give up, and we finished with the best round in the tournament at the end.'
Taylor finished the day in a tie for third place at 2-under, carding a combined 140, while Lee is at even par, 142, in a tie for seventh. Following those two were Darren Wallace (148), Ty Chambers (151) and Chris Killmer (164). Thurmond said that the weather played a factor in his team's sluggish start.
'The wind blew around pretty hard,' he said. 'We played the practice round and thought the course was going to play pretty easy. It was cold and windy all day and when we got here this morning, we knew the wind was going to make things more difficult.'
Tee times for the third and final round begin and 9:40 a.m. with Killmer and end at 10:20 a.m. with Taylor. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
