UCLA's Abid, Arizona's Steinberg Named Pac-10 Men's And Women's Tennis Players Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA junior Haythem Abid and ARIZONA senior Danielle Steinberg have been named Pac-10 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for Mar. 2 - 8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Abid led UCLA to a 4-3 victory over No. 8 USC on Mar. 4. In doubles, the Tunis, Tunisia, native teamed up with Nick Meister to upset fourth-ranked Robert Farah and Steve Johnson, 8-5. In singles, he then knocked off the nation’s No. 1 player, Farah, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The junior capped his week by winning the Pacific Coast Double Championship with Meister on Mar. 8. The Bruin duo won six straight matches to claim the title, downing Farah and Johnson once more in the round of 16.
This is the first weekly honor for Abid and the 12th overall for UCLA.
Steinberg led Arizona to its first Conference win since 2007, defeating Washington State, 6-1. The Tel Aviv, Israel, native took down Ekaterina Kamendova, 6-4, 6-0. In doubles, she paired with Sarah Landsman to top the Cougars’ team of Marina Nicolas and Bianca Selaru, 8-2. Despite falling to Washington on Mar. 7, Steinberg earned a win in the No. 1 singles position over the Huskies’ Venise Chan, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. She also picked up another doubles victory with Landsman, taking down Aleksandra Malovic and Lina Xu of Washington, 9-7.
This is the third Player of the Week accolade for Steinberg, the only player to earn the weekly honor for Arizona.
