Arizona's Leles and Stanford's Penna Named Pac-10 Softball Player, Pitcher of the Week

March 10, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--ARIZONA senior third baseman Jenae Leles and STANFORD senior pitcher Missy Penna were named the Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 3-8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Leles, a native of Fair Oaks, Calif., spearheaded the Wildcats offensive attack over the weekend at Arizona’s own Hillenbrand Invitational, batting in a massive 18 RBI and belting six home runs over a six game span.  At the plate, the senior went 12-for-20 (.600) recording a massive 1.550 slugging percentage.

On Friday, Leles picked up the bulk of her RBI in UA’s double header against Minnesota.  Driving in nine batters, Leles hit three home runs in the two game series, including a three-run, a two-run and a solo home-run shot.  The third baseman also drove in three runs on a pair of singles in game two.  Leles efforts on Friday helped the Wildcats outscore Minnesota a combined 30-7.

Leles now has nine home runs total on the season and has upped her batting average to .392, good for second on the team.

This marks the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Leles and the 123rd all-time for the Wildcats.

Penna, a native of Miami, Fla., added three more shutouts over the weekend, helping Stanford extend it’s Pac-10-leading 23 game win streak.  With her weekend shutout, Penna extended her own personal streak of 41 consecutive innings with out allowing an earned run.  The senior currently is the only player in Stanford history to reach 40 career shutouts.

Over the weekend, Penna struck out 20 batters in 20 innings, allowing only nine hits.  Penna is currently second in the Pac-10 with a 0.61 ERA on the season.

With her sixth career Pac-10 Player of the Week distinction, Penna ties Washington’s Danielle Lawrie with the most active career player of the week honors in the Pac-10.  Overall, Stanford has earned 41 Pac-10 Player of the Week honors.
