March 10, 2009
SORRENTO, Fla. - Freshman Margarita Ramos shot a 2-under round of 70 to lead Arizona to a 12th place team finish at the UCF Challenge, Tuesday afternoon at Red Tail Golf Club.
Arizona finished the three-day event with a team score of 883, firing its lowest score of the tournament on Tuesday with a 291. The Wildcats finished amidst a pack of nine teams all separated by just 10 shots.
After falling into 15th place after Monday's round, the Wildcats were hovering around a 2- and 3-under team score as both Ramos and Alejandra Llaneza were firing sub-70 rounds. It took just one hole for the Wildcats to drop from 8th place down out of the top 10.
Llaneza, who was 3-under through 12 holes, stumbled to a triple-bogey six on the par-3 4th hole. The only blemish of the day on a near perfect round, she finished at even par 72 for the second time in three days.
Ramos, who fired three birdies over her opening nine holes, misfired on the 1st hole for a bogey, then carded bogey on the 7th after recording her 4th birdie of the day on the par-4 5th hole. Llaneza finished in a five-way tie for 23rd place at 2-over 218 while Ramos ended up two shots behind her at 4-over 220 in a tie for 37th position.
Nikki Koller completed her three days of play with a 2-over 74 and finished tied for 43rd at 221 (+5) while Isabelle Boineau shot 75 to finish at 8-over 224. Brittany Benvenuto rounded out the team by shooting 84.
Arizona returns to action on Thursday, March 19 at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas, at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
