Football Practice in Pictures
March 10, 2009
TUCSON--The University of Arizona football team has concluded about one third of its spring football practice, with 11 more sessions to go, capped by the Spring Game on Saturday, April 4.
Head coach Mike Stoops and staff -- still one coach shy while awaiting a final hiring of the inside receivers coach -- will put the team through some live scrimmage action in practice Wednesday.
Professional scouts will be on hand Saturday morning for some timing and physical tests during Pro Timing Day -- the occasion for 2008 seniors to showcase their talent up close prior to the April NFL Draft.
Spring's primary question, at least from a public point of views, is the competition at quarterback, where sophomores Matt Scott, Nick Foles and Bryson Beirne are trying to get a leg up toward the starting role. Stoops said before spring practice began that the contest likely will extend through the early part of fall training camp in August.
The Arizona staff brainstormed with visiting coach Mike Price of UTEP (and formerly Washington State) and some of his assistants on Monday. One observation the Miners' head guy had was after a sideline catch by junior tight end Rob Gronkowski: 'That guy is going to be a special player.'
Gronkowski, of course, already has made some marks -- a third-team AP All-America citation and status as the reigning first-team All-Pac-10 guy at his position.
