Huskies Win At Lexas Classic
March 10, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. -- The No. 15 Huskies finished a tournament atop the score board for the second time in the 2008-09 season after winning the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic on Tuesday.
The Huskies closed out the victory by shooting a final round, 7-under 281, which broke the second-round tie with UC Davis for first place. Leading the Dawgs was junior Nick Taylor, who finished in the runner-up position with a 2-under 214 (72-70-72), marking his fourth top-10 finish this season.
'It was really great to play the way we did coming into the final round,' said UW head coach Matt Thurmond. 'When you have a lead that is harder to do because there is much more pressure.'
And the Dawgs did not fold, in fact, some of them flourished. Junior Darren Wallace, shot a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to move him up the leader board 15 spots to finish in a tie for fifth place with a total score of 215.
'It was great to see Darren lead us out there,' Thurmond said. 'His goal coming into this week was to finish strong in the end because he hasn't been able to do that this year. Until the last month or so, he hasn't been playing too well. And we need him playing like this because it takes some of the pressure off the other guys. His 67 was crucial. Chris Killmer was able to forget about his day yesterday and shoot a 3-under round today.'
Killmer (77-87-69 233) finished in a tie for 80th place. Also scoring for the Huskies was Richard Lee, who made his sixth top-10 finish in seven career Division I tournaments, carding a (75-69-73) 217, which earned him ninth place. Freshman Ty Chambers also was impressive, finishing in a tie for 40th with a (78-73-74) 225. This is the first time in the 46-year history of the Lexus Classic that the Huskies have taken first, but in September of 2008, they won their home tournament, the Husky Invitational.
The Huskies will take a couple weeks off before playing in the Oregon Duck Invitational March 23-24 at the Eugene Country Club.
