Jordan Pries Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week For March 2-8
March 10, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford freshman right-hander Jordan Pries has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for March 2-8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. This marks the first weekly honor for Pries and the first for Stanford in 2009.
Pries made his first career start Saturday against Texas, and stymied the Longhorns over 7.1-brilliant innings to hand them their first and only loss of the season. Texas was No. 2 at the time, but is now the top-ranked team in the country according to Baseball America. Pries carried a shutout into the eighth inning and allowed only three hits - a double and two singles - while walking two and striking out four in the 7-1 Cardinal victory. The Alameda, Calif. native allowed only one Texas runner to get as far as second base, before departing with one out in the eighth and a runner on first (who later scored).
Just three appearances into his first collegiate season, Pries is now 2-0 and boasts victories over Southeastern Conference power Vanderbilt and Big-12 stalwart Texas. He has fashioned a 3.14 ERA (5er, 14.1ip), while allowing just eight hits in 50 at-bats (.160).
Stanford is off until March 21, when the Cardinal opens Pac-10 play with a three-game series at California. First pitch for the March 21 series opener in Berkeley is set for 1:00 p.m. PT.
