March 12, 2009
HONOLULU, HI - California recorded its second straight shutout of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament after a 2-0 win over Wisconsin on Thursday evening.
Cal (19-4) has now shutout eight opponents this season. Valerie Arioto was dominant in the circle and improved to 8-0 scattering two hits and walking just two with eight strikeouts. In fact Wisconsin got both of its hits in the sixth inning.
Neither team generated much offense in the first two innings. But the Badgers had something going in the third with runners on first and third with two outs. However, Arioto got the next batter to foul out to Sanoe Kekahuna to end the inning.
Cal finally unlocked the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning and took a 1-0 lead on the Badgers. Bernice Masaniai led the inning off with a double to right-center field and was replaced by Echavarria. Kekahuna then laid down a sacrifice bunt one batter later to advance Echavarria to third. Taylor Kelly followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Echavarria.
The Bears went right back to work in the top of the sixth after Arioto sat Wisconsin down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Jamia Reid connected on her sixth home run of the season with one out to put the Bears up 2-0.
Wisconsin looked to threaten in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and third with one out. But Arioto was up to the task again and induced a groundout, before recording a strikeout to end the frame.
Arioto was solid again in the bottom of the seventh, retiring three straight batters after a leadoff error had a runner on first.
