Q & A With Elisa Bryant
March 12, 2009
Sophomore Elisa Bryant, a graduate of Inglemoor High School, is one day away from competing in her first career NCAA Indoor Championships meet this Friday at Texas A&M in the weight throw. Already the school record holder in the weight throw and second all-time in hammer throw, she has the potential to go down as one of the best in Washington's storied throws tradition. GoHuskies.com caught up with Bryant before the UW Last Chance Meet to talk about her career so far as a Husky and what she is looking forward to for the rest of the season.
GoHuskies.com: You come from a family of Huskies. Your father was a strength coach for the Huskies. Was there ever any doubt in your mind that you would be a Husky?
Elisa Bryant: Probably, maybe one percent. No actually, I pretty much knew.
GH: What do you like most about Washington?
EB: I love being an athlete. I love being able to compete at the collegiate level. I was around it when I was little. It was something that I kind of aspired to. Actually being an athlete in D-I is really fun. I think I like that the best.
GH: What is the biggest difference between high school and college meets?
EB: It's like night and day. High school, you're trying to figure out just what the sport is. You're still trying to figure out what the sport is in college. I guess it's just another level of seriousness in college. This is where you get records. It's definitely a platform.
GH: What are you planning to study?
EB: Business. It's going good.
GH: You already have a provisional NCAA qualifying mark. What would a strong showing be for you should you make NCAA's?
EB: Well I'm trying to get 20 meters this season. If I get 20 meters I'll be really happy.
GH: Through your sophomore year, you are already among Washington's top throwers of all time. What does that mean to you?
EB: When I'm working out or competing, I'm really focusing on doing the best I can do. I don't really compare it to other athletes. I don't think I'm worthy to compare it to other athletes. If I expect myself to do my best, then I'm happy with that. If I feel like I have, then I'm happy with that.
GH: What throw do you prefer and why?
EB: I love discus. Discus was always my favorite. But the hammer is really fun too.
GH: Do you prefer to indoor or outdoor?
EB: Dempsey is definitely home. But travelling outdoors is probably the most fun thing that I am going to do during my four years here. I love travelling.
GH: What are you goals for the rest of the season?
EB: I want to make it to NCAA's for indoor. For outdoor, I'm trying to make it to NCAA's too. That's my goal right now is just take it day to day, make it to NCAA's, and when I go to NCAA's see what I get from there.
