Riley Helps New Zealand To Fourth-Place Finish at Cyprus Cup
March 12, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - Women's soccer rising senior Ali Riley took a break from studying abroad in Italy this quarter to help the New Zealand Women's National Team to a fourth place finish at the Cyrpus Cup in Nicosia, Cyprus.
In the first game of Group B play on March 6, Riley had an assist in a 1-1 draw with Canada.
Then, on March 8 against the Russians, the Football Ferns' hopes for a shot at the Cyprus Cup title were dashed with a disappointing loss, 4-2.
In the third match of group play on March 11, the Kiwis pulled off an upset of the Netherlands, 2-0, who is currently ranked No. 17 in the world, and earned a spot in the third-place match.
In the consolation match, New Zealand was on its way to an even bigger upset of the French side, heading into the final minutes of the game with a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for Riley and the Football Ferns, the French leveled the match in the 87th minute and ultimately won 6-5 in a penalty shootout.
Riley played the full-90 in each of the four games.
