The Sun Devil baseball team had no game scheduled on Thursday, but that didn't stop anyone from enjoying their time in Surprise for the annual Coca-Cola Classic at Surprise Stadium.
In the morning, head coach Pat Murphy visited the Seattle Mariners Spring Training complex in Peoria, thanks to an invitation from Mariners Manager Don Wakamatsu. Wakamatsu played four years for Arizona State, earning All-Pac-10 honors at catcher in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
Murphy visited with Mariners players and coaches, including future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., before spending some time with Wakamatsu in his office. During the visit, Wakamatsu made sure Griffey was aware of where he had played his college baseball, presenting the active home run leader with his very own maroon and gold Sun Devil baseball cap.
In the afternoon the Sun Devil players hosted the Sandlot Surprise Kids Clinic for 75 kids on the field at Surprise Stadium following the Royals/White Sox Spring Training game. The Sun Devils ran stations that covered pitching, hitting, baserunning and fielding, then Coach Murphy hosted a question and answer session with the kids and their parents.
The Devils return to action on Friday night when they take on the Kansas Jayhawks at Surprise Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 45 minutes following the conclusion of the Spring Training game between the Rangers and Royals.
