Beavers Fall to No. 13 Mizzou on the Road
March 13, 2009
Columbia, Mo. – The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked No. 9, came up short to No. 13 Missouri, Friday night at the Hearnes Center in Columbia. The Beavers finished with a score of 195.950 while the Tigers hit all 24 of their routines to finish at 196.425.
Oregon State began the first rotation, on uneven bars, slowly with a pair of 9.65’s from Olivia Vivian and Mandi Rodriguez before Jami Lanz nailed her dismount to score 9.85. Laura-Ann Chong and Jen Kesler followed with matching scores of 9.825. Leslie Mak, who has reigning Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week, scored 9.9 to tie for the event title.
The Beavers held a one-tenth lead going to the vault. Johnnie Rae Schmelzer led off for OSU with a score of 9.675. Stephanie McGregor followed with a 9.75 and Whitney Watson scored 9.65 despite coming up gimpy after the landing. Becky Colvin and Lanz scored 9.775 and Rodriguez finished the rotation with a 9.80.
OSU trailed by .275 as they moved to the floor exercise. The Beavers’ 11th-ranked floor team sought to close the gap but conservative judging, a couple stumbles and an extremely uncharacteristic fall by Rodriguez, who fought an illness all week, left Oregon State with a team score of 48.800. Jereme Bigelow, Kera Bolen and Lanz led the Beavers with matching scores of 9.80 while Mak and McGregor added scores of 9.75 and 9.65 respectively.
Oregon State finished strong scoring 49.350 in the final rotation to finish the meet at 195.950. All six OSU beam workers scored 9.8 or better with Brooke Barclay and Kesler starting the rotation with scores of 9.8. Rodriguez tallied a career-best 9.875 followed with a 9.9. Mak tied her career-high of 9.925 to win her second event title of the night. Lanz finished the night for the Beavers with a score of 9.85.
Next up for the Beavers is the Pac-10 Championships at Stanford next Saturday. Oregon State finished second at last year’s conference championships at Washington.
