Cal Advances to Pac-10 Semi-Finals
March 13, 2009
LOS ANGELES -
The No. 2 seed California Golden Bears (25-5, 15-3 Pac-10) take on the No. 6 seed USC Trojans (16-14, 9-9 Pac-10) in the Pac-10 Tournament semi-finals on Saturday, March 14 at 6 p.m. on the Trojans home court, the Galen Center, in Los Angeles. The game will be carried live on Fox Sports Net with Jim Watson and Mary Murphy calling the action.
The Bears cruised through their quarterfinal match-up with the Washington Huskies with a 61-41 victory sending the Bears to the semi-finals for the third straight year. No member of the starting lineup played more than 20 minutes in the victory.
Senior forward Ashley Walker posted a double double, her 11th of the season, with 14 points and 10 rebounds, in just 16 minutes on the court. Walker began the game going 6-for-6 from the field before missing her final two shots. Walker's best start to a game was her 7-for-7 performance in the March 1 loss to UCLA.
Senior forward Devanei Hampton scored nine points, breaking her streak of four straight games scoring in double-digits. Hampton is averaging 11.7 points per game so far in the month of March. Hampton, a two-time all-Pac-10 tournament team honoree, now averages 16.1 points and 10.6 rebounds in her 7 career tournament games.
Cal had 37 rebounds to UW's 20, the 11th time this year the Bears have finished with at least 10 boards more than their opponents. The 20 rebounds allowed was a Pac-10 Tournament record low.
In four of the Bears last five victories, the Bears have held their opponent to under 50 points. The lone exception was the 64 points scored by USC on Feb. 27.
The Bears will take on the USC Trojans as they try to advance and make just their second Pac-10 Championship game appearance. The Bears are a perfect 4-0 at the Galen Center. The Bears have won the last eight meetings between the two teams, though USC holds a 31-21 advantage in all-time meetings. The Bears won both meetings this season by two points, 73-71 and 66-64. The Bears and Trojans have had their games go into overtime twice in the last six meetings.
The Bears have outrebounded the Trojans in both of their meetings this season, pulling in an average of 8.5 more rebounds in those games than USC.
Two of Ashley Walker's 11 double doubles this season have come against the Trojans. She has scored 32 points with 28 rebounds this year against USC. Devanei Hampton also had a double double of 17 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting of the year between the two.
