March 13, 2009
BERKELEY - The California volleyball team has set four spring competition dates, head coach Rich Feller announced today. The Golden Bears will get their first spring test across the bay at a tournament hosted by USF on April 4. Cal will host its only spring event on Wednesday, April 8 when Stanford visits Haas Pavilion for a 7 p.m. scrimmage. Two weeks later, the Bears will face Saint Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. The team concludes spring play with a tournament at Santa Clara on May 2.
The Bears received the No. 6 ranking in the final Bison/AVCA poll, after completing the 2008 season with the best record in school history at 26-7 (.788). Cal also recorded a program-best 13 victories in conference play (defeating every team at least once for the first time in school history) and finished third in the Pac-10 (13-5).
Cal advanced to the NCAA regional final for the second consecutive year where they fell to eventual NCAA champion, top-seeded Penn State in the University Park region. The Bears set school records with new marks for winning streaks by claiming 29 consecutive sets without a loss and winning 16 straight home matches.
