March 13, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team earned its first Pacific-10 victory of the season Friday, downing No. 57 Oregon, 4-3, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The Ducks grabbed a 1-0 lead after earning victories at each doubles position.

At No. 1, the WSU tandem of Bianca Selaru and Elisabeth Fournier competed against Oregon's, Ana Cecilia Olivos and Pavlina Schmitova. After a hard fought battle between the two squads, the Cougars fell, 8-2.

Ekaterina Kamendova and Marina Nicolas traded points with Trudie Du Toit and Carmen Seremeta while competing at the No. 2 slot. The Cougars held a 7-5 advantage before the Ducks tandem rallied to earn the victory, 8-7 (3).

In singles action, Fournier earned the first victory for Washington State with a straight set win over Ana Cecilia Olivos, 6-2, 6-3. With the win, Fournier pushes her season record to 15-9 which is best on the team.

Senior Aleksandra Cekic picked up her 11th victory of the season after downing Oregon's Smatova, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

At the No. 1 singles position, Kamendova meet Seremate in a three-set marathon match. The WSU sophomore came out strong winning the first-set, 6-3. Seremeta battled back to take the second-set, 6-4. Oregon's senior leader then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third-set, but that was not enough as Kamendova came storming back winning six straight points to take the third-set, 6-4, and win the match

The Cougars clinched that match behind the strong play of Nicolas at the No 6 slot. The WSU sophomore won in convincing fashion over Oregon's Siophan Cavan, 6-1, 6-3.

'Today is verification of what I have known all season,' Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. 'We are a very good team and even though we have come across some bad luck, we are talented and resilient and I am proud of the way we fought for every point in singles today and our players deserve this outcome.'

The Cougars will return to the court Saturday March 14, when Montana Grizzlies come to Pullman, at 10 a.m.
