Huskies Utilize Depth To Sweep Gonzaga

March 13, 2009

SEATTLE - It was a night of several firsts for the 24th-ranked Washington men's tennis team, as a number of young players got a chance to contribute to a 7-0 sweep of Gonzaga at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Matt Stith and Skyler Tateishi saw their first dual match play while Alex Rosinski got his first start in singles. All were winners for the Huskies (10-5).

Washington head coach Matt Anger got to rest some of his usual starters against the Bulldogs this evening. Despite the youthful lineup, Washington still won every match in straight sets. Tateishi, a sophomore, clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Zack Peach at No. 5 singles. It was Tateishi's first dual match action of any kind.

Stith, a redshirt freshman, got his first dual match play during the doubles point, as he teamed with sophomore Tobi Obenaus to defeat GU's Feddersen and Schuster, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Alex Rosinski has seen action in several doubles matches this year, yet he also got his first singles start and made quick work of Tom Falkowski. Rosinski did not drop at game, winning 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.

Obenaus and sophomore Brad Bator picked up wins at third and fourth singles, respectively. Bator was making just his third career singles start, and is now 2-1.

Regular starters Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Derek Drabble remained at the top of the lineup and were the final two players to sew up wins. Nedunchezhiyan topped Feddersen, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Drabble moved up to the No. 2 singles spot for the first time and beat Roman Dojcak, 6-1, 7-5.

Washington breaks for finals this week and then heads to Indian Wells, Calif. over spring break to play a neutral site match against 69th-ranked Pacific. That match, set for March 24, will mark the end of UW's non-conference schedule, and Pac-10 play begins March 29 at home against Arizona.
