Winthrop Takes First Game, 5-2

March 13, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Bryn Henderson went 2-for-4 as his RBI single keyed a three-run eighth Friday as the Winthrop Eagles defeated the USC Trojans, 5-2, in the first of a four-game nonconference series at Dedeaux Field.

Dominic Patterozi earned the win for the Eagles (11-3) by allowing only one run on four hits in 7 2/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Tyler Mizenko picked up his third save of the season with one no-hit inning.

Brad Boxberger (2-1) took the loss for USC (4-8), allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts in seven innings. Sophomore second baseman Joe De Pinto (Sunland/St. Francis HS) went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Trojans.

A pitchers' duel developed in the first seven innings of the game. After Boxberger induced a leadoff groundout by Henderson in the first, he struck out five straight and six of seven batters. Eddie Tisdale led off the Winthrop fourth with a walk and a Boxberger wild pitch moved him to second. Kevin Nolan moved Tisdale over with a groundout and John Murrian produced the first run of the game with an RBI groundout to short, scoring Tisdale.

Anthony Vasquez and Robert Stock walked in the bottom of the seventh and a sacrifice by Keith Castillo moved both runners. Hector Rabago was intentionally walked to load the bases and freshman Beau Brett (Spokane, Wash.) tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right.

Pinch hitter Tyler McBride walked to begin the Winthrop eighth. Cam Walters attempted a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, but Boxberger threw the ball wide of first to put runners at first and third. Henderson then singled to right and Tisdale followed with a sacrifice, plating Walters. Nolan was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second, but USC reliever Ryan Cabral walked Murrian to load the bases. Daniel Cooper came in and uncorked a wild pitch to score Henderson and make it a 4-1 lead.

Winthrop added an insurance run in the ninth when Henderson hit a double down the left field line with two outs. Walters looked to be thrown out at home easily, but Stock was unable to handle the cutoff throw to score the run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Stock and Castillo were hit by back-to-back pitches for runners at first and second. Rabago struck out and pinch hitter Brandon Garcia reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third with two outs. Freshman pinch hitter Ricky Oropesa then hit a hard ground ball that went through the legs of Nolan at short to score Stock, but the 7-4-2 defensive play by the Eagles cut down Garcia at the plate to end the game.

The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start. Sunday's game also starts at 2 p.m. with Monday's series finale beginning at 2:30 p.m. All three games will be broadcast by a live video webcast, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
