March 15, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Junior shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI Sunday as the USC Trojans beat the Winthrop Eagles, 12-3, in the third game of a four-game nonconference series at Dedeaux Field. Freshman designated hitter/pitcher Ricky Oropesa (Rancho Cucamonga/Etiwanda HS) continued his hot weekend with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a double.

USC (6-8) jumped on Winthrop starter Wade Newman with eight runs in the first inning after the Eagles had taken a 2-0 lead in the first. Newman allowed 10 runs (eight earned) in four innings, allowing 10 hits and walking three.

Kevin Couture went six innings for the Trojans, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Oropesa entered the game as a pitcher in the ninth and threw a perfect inning with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Eddie Tisdale gave the Eagles (11-5) the lead in the first with a two-run homer before the Trojans came to bat in the first. Green and Anthony Vasquez recorded back-to-back singles as Robert Stock lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to score Green. Hector Rabago tied it with an RBI single as Oropesa singled and Brandon Garcia walked to load the bases. Billy Pinkerton then hit a two-run single to center and another walk to Garret Houts loaded the bases again. Joe De Pinto hit a two-run single to center, followed by Green's two-run double to center to finish the scoring.

The Trojans added a run in the third and fourth innings and two runs in the seventh before the Eagles scored their final run in the eighth.

The series concludes tomorrow with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch. The game will be broadcast by a live video webcast, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
