March 16, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. - Bruce Read has been named football special teams coordinator, Oregon State head coach Mike Riley announced Monday.
The 47-year-old rejoins the Beaver coaching staff for the third time, having previous stints from 1997-98 and 2004-06. He also was the special teams coach for the San Diego Chargers (1999-2001), also for Riley, the New York Giants (2002-03) and the Dallas Cowboys (2007-08). His coaching career began at the University of Montana in 1985 working for his father, head coach Don Read, where he would stay through the 1996 season.
'Were very excited to welcome Coach Read back to Oregon State,' Beaver head coach Mike Riley said. 'Coach Read is one of the best special teams coaches in the country and I look forward in him assisting in the success of this team.'
Read has coached some Oregon State's top special teams players during his career, including 2005 Lou Groza Award recipient and All-America placekicker Alexis Serna, Pac-10 First Team and current NFL punter Sam Paulescu, and 2006 All-American Sammie Stroughter.
Read will have his first opportunity to coach his new players, which include 2008 Sun Bowl special teams MVP punter Johnny Hekker, when the Beavers take the field March 30 for the opening of spring practice. The 15-day session culminates in the annual Spring Game May 2 at Reser Stadium.
