WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
No. 26-ranked California women's tennis freshman Jana Juricova has been named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for March 9-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The first-year Golden Bear leads the team with 26 singles wins and 21 doubles wins this season. She is the second player (sophomore Mari Andersson) from Cal to earn the weekly conference honor this year and becomes the school's eighth winner overall.
Juricova led the Bears to wins over No. 5 Baylor (4-3) and No. 14 Arizona State (5-2) last week. In singles play, she defeated 46th-ranked Lenka Broosova of Baylor, 6-0, 6-2, and then pulled off the upset of ASU's Kelcy McKenna (ranked No. 3 in the nation), 6-0, 6-1, on the road. Her singles record stands at a team-best 26-4 this year. In doubles, Juricova teamed with Andersson to take out Baylor's No. 55-ranked duo of Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanviuk, 8-3, before claiming an 8-6 victory over the Sun Devils' 10th-ranked duo of Micaela Hein and McKenna. Juricova and Andersson are 12-1 in matches together this season.
The Bears play two matches at home before resuming the Pac-10 schedule on the road as they host Denver on Thursday (March 19) at 1:30 p.m. and Fresno State on Saturday (March 21) at noon. Please check CalBears.com for more details and information.
