Oregon State Invited to Women's NIT

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's basketball team has been selected to play in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, it was announced Monday night. The Beavers have a first-round bye and will play the winner of Portland-Portland State Saturday at legendary Gill Coliseum. With the selection of the NCAA Tournament teams earlier today, four Pac-10 teams will be participating in postseason events.
The Beavers made the WNIT as the automatic berth from the Pacific-10 Conference after finishing tied for fourth in the league in 2008-09.
Tickets to the WNIT will be available beginning Tuesday morning by visiting the ticket office at legendary Gill Coliseum, by calling 1-800-GOBEAVS or visiting osubeavers.com.
Oregon State comes into the WNIT with a 19-11 overall record after finishing the Pac-10 regular season with a 9-9 mark. The Beavers won their final four games of the regular season to finish in a tie for fourth with UCLA and USC.
It is the second WNIT trip for the Beavers under head coach LaVonda Wagner. The Beavers made the WNIT in 2005-06, her first season at Oregon State.
Portland (West Coast Conference) and Portland State (Big Sky) both earned automatic bids into the tournament. Portland finished the 2008-09 season with a 17-13 overall record and 10-4 mark in conference play. Portland State, meanwhile, posted a 22-9 record through the regular season and finished with a 14-2 mark in Big Sky games. The Vikings lost to Oregon State, 58-24, on Dec. 7 at Gill Coliseum.
The teams will play Thursday night and Portland State with the winner venturing to Gill Coliseum Saturday night.
2009 Pac-10 Tournament Champion Stanford, California and Arizona State will play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend on Saturday, March 21. The Cardinal are the No. 2 seed in the Berkeley Regional, while Cal and ASU are the No. 4 and 6 seeds, respectively, in the Trenton Regional.
