Chambers Racks Up Weekend Honors
March 17, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Amateur Softball Association announced today that Arizona's Stacie Chambers (Glendale, Ariz.) was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for her offensive efforts at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
Chambers was also named the Pac-10 Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
'It really is an honor and a great feeling,' said Chambers. 'But it only raises the bar for myself and makes me want to work harder. Our team is going to come out and work hard as we head into Pac-10 play next week, and we are all driven to make it back to Oklahoma City.'
The junior catcher tallied 15 RBI and seven runs scored in 14 at-bats. In total, three players tallied seven RBI in the tournament, which was the second-highest output, but Chambers had 15. She nabbed six hits over the tournament - all home runs - bringing her season total to 19 and her RBI total to 66, leading the Pac-10 conference.
'It's a very prestigious honor,' said Arizona head coach Mike Candrea. 'Stacie had an outstanding performance this weekend, and we're always glad to see our players getting recognition. It's an honor for our program.'
All 15 RBI came in only three games as Chambers knocked in seven runs on two homers against New Mexico - including her third grand slam of the season, and four runs on two homers against both Penn State and Notre Dame. Two walks, including an intentional base on balls, against ND gave her a 2-for-2 performance with three runs scored.
Chambers homered in her final two at-bats against Penn State and her first two at-bats against Notre Dame, thus becoming the first person in Arizona's long and prestigious history to hit four home runs in consecutive plate appearances.
Chambers has now had three weekends in which she tallied 15 or more RBI. This also marks the first USA Softball Player of the Week honor for Chambers, and her second Pac-10 honor. Arizona has earned a Conference-leading 124 all-time Pac-10 honors.
