March 18, 2009
MALIBU, CALIF. - The No. 10 USC women's tennis team captured its 12th win of 2009 with a 6-1 victory over host No. 57 Pepperdine on Wednesday afternoon in Malibu. The doubles point came quickly to the Trojans, and was followed by a series of singles wins as the Women of Troy rolled out to victory to improve to 12-2 overall on the season.
At No. 1 singles, #10 Amanda Fink / Gabriela Niculescu grabbed an early lead on #49 Waves pair Bhargava/Liles and scooped up an 8-3 win for USC's first victory of the day. At No. 3, Pepperdine cut to within one with Trojans Alison Ramos / Maria Sanchez ahead of Oates/Rice 3-2, and then the Women of Troy reeled off the next five games to take an 8-2 win and snag the doubles point for USC. USC's #53 Sarah Fansler / Lyndsay Kinstler fell 8-4 at No. 2 to Pepperdine's Walters/Voicu, but the doubles point was already in USC hands.
Stepping into the No. 6 singles slot was sophomore Cristala Andrews for USC, and she made quick work of her Pepperdine opponent Tania Rice to take USC's second point of the match in a 6-2, 6-1 victory. #58 Gabriela Niculescu picked up the next Trojan point along with her eighth consecutive singles win, making it 3-0 USC with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Anne Christene Voicu at No. 4. Meanwhile, at No. 1, #12 Maria Sanchez had outlasted her opponent Anamika Bhargava 7-5 thanks to a late break in the second set. In the next, Sanchez went down 0-2 and rallied right back to lose no more games, capping off the match with a strong service game to take a 7-5, 6-2 victory that clinched the match for the Women of Troy.
At No. 3, #26 Amanda Fink controlled her match with a solid second set en route to putting away Alex Liles 6-4, 6-1 to make it a 5-0 USC lead in the match and tally her ninth straight singles win. That left the No. 2 and No. 5 matches still going. At No. 5, freshman #62 Alison Ramos came back to force a tiebreak for the third and tacked up the win in a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) victory over Andrea Oates. #25 Sarah Fansler's No. 2 singles match saw her Pepperdine opponent Alexandria Walters escape with the first set in at tiebreak, and the Waves wound up getting their lone point of the match with Walters' 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Fansler.
USC's next competition comes next week with a visit to San Diego at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday (March 24). After that, Pac-10 play heats up with Cal and Stanford coming to Marks Stadium. The Trojans host Cal at 1:30 on Friday (March 27) and then face Stanford at 12 p.m. on Saturday (March 28).
