March 19, 2009
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Four members of the 2009 UCLA Gymnastics squad have been honored on the Pac-10 All-Academic team. Senior Ariana Berlin earned her third academic honor, being named to the first team, while sophomores Marci Bernholtz, Mizuki Sato and Niki Tom received honorable mention acclaim.
Berlin, who was a second-team selection a year ago, boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.55 in World Arts & Culture (Dance concentration). She has earned NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors twice in her career. The Bruin senior has been a star on the competition floor as well, twice earning All-Pac-10 honors in the all-around and hitting 96% of her career routines, with career-highs of 9.9 or higher on all four events. This season, she has scored 9.8 or better on 24 of her 29 routines on the year. Berlin has not missed a meet in her career, competing in 54 consecutive meets.
In their first year of eligibility for the Pac-10 All-Academic team, Bernholtz, Sato and Tom each earned their first honor. All three are Physiological Science majors. Bernholtz has competed on beam in nine meets, recording a season-high of 9.85 to tie for first place honors at Nebraska. She has also seen action on uneven bars and scored a career-high 9.8 last weekend in an exhibition performance against the Huskers. Sato has competed in every meet this season, recording career-highs of 9.9 on vault and floor. She has three wins on the year, two on floor and one on vault. She is averaging 9.811 on vault and 9.755 on floor. Tom has also competed in every meet this year and ranks 11th in the Pac-10 on beam. She has captured three beam wins and posted career-highs of 9.9 on beam, 9.875 on floor and 9.75 on bars this year.
