Six Gymnasts Earn Pac-10 Academic Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Six Oregon State gymnasts received recognition for their work in the classroom when the Pac-10 Conference’s All-Academic teams were announced Thursday by Commissioner Tom Hansen. With two OSU gymnasts earning second team honors and four earning honorable mention, the Beavers tied for the second-most selections in the conference to Stanford (8). Kera Bolen and Laura-Ann Chong each received second team recognition and Brooke Barclay, Jereme Bigelow, Mandi Rodriguez and Whitney Watson earned honorable mention.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor and have attended their institution for a year or more.
Bolen, an Exercise and Sport Science major, has competed in the floor exercise lineup for the Beavers in 10 of 11 meets this season. In addition, the senior from Lake Oswego, Ore. has been an alternate to the uneven bars lineup most of the year and has performed in the lineup twice. Prior to this, her season year, Bolen took up vaulting for the first time in her collegiate career and was inserted in the lineup earlier this year against Utah. She scored a 9.625 in the only vault of her career. Her season-high score of 9.85 came against Arizona State in early February. Bolen is a two-time All-Academic honorable mention selection in 2007 and 2008.
Chong, a junior from Coquitlam, B.C., has competed in the Beavers’ bars and beam lineups in 10 of 11 meets this season. Chong, an Exercise and Sport Science major, set a career-high on beam two weeks ago at OSU’s Salbasgeon Suites Invitational with a 9.925. She added a season-high 9.875 on bars in the same meet and has scored 9.825 or higher in each of the last four meets. Chong was a second team Pac-10 All-Academic selection in 2008.
Also earning recognition as honorable mention recipients are senior Brooke Barclay, juniors Mandi Rodriguez and Whitney Watson and sophomore Jereme Bigelow. This is the third honorable mention honor for Barclay and second for Rodriguez and Watson.
