BYU Blanks Bears, 4-0
March 20, 2009
SACRAMENTO - The California softball team fell to the BYU Cougars, 4-0 in the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State on Friday.
Cal (21-5) faces UNLV later this afternoon.
The Golden Bears were limited to five hits and committed three errors. Marissa Drewrey suffered the loss in the circle, allowing all four runs (three earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.
Neither team generated much pop in the first three innings, until the fourth when BYU put up two runs in the top half of the inning. Angeline Quiocho notched a bunt single with one out and was followed by Jessica Purcell's triple to right field to plate Quiocho. Stephanie Hopkins then followed with a single to centerfield to bring in Purcell.
In the fifth inning, BYU widened its lead after two Cal errors extended the inning. Monica Gonzales led off with a single, and was brought in on a double from Quiocho. Quiocho would then score on a single from Andrea Ramirez.
Cal had its best chance at a comeback in the sixth inning when Elia Reid drew a walk coupled with a Valerie Arioto single. However Cougar pitcher Paige Affleck recorded a strikeout; Reid was thrown out at the plate on a scoring attempt, before a strikeout ended the scoring threat.
