March 20, 2009
SACRAMENTO - The seventh-ranked Cal softball team rebounded from its 4-0 loss to BYU earlier in the afternoon with a resounding 8-0 win in six innings over UNLV at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State on Friday.
The Bears (22-5) take on Colorado State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Elia Reid had three of Cal's 12 total hits, to go along with a run, a triple and a double. Valerie Arioto, Gina Leomiti and Taylor Kelly all had two hits. Marissa Drewrey was extremely productive in the circle, earning her 14th win of the season, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out nine.
Cal unlocked a scoreless tie in the second inning when Sanoe Kekahuna led off with her team leading seventh home run of the season over the left-center field wall. Kelly then followed with a triple to right field on a 2-2 count, before scoring after Frani Echavarria grounded out to the short stop for the RBI, giving Cal a 2-0 lead.
The Bears extended their lead in the fifth inning courtesy of Leomiti's bat. Elia Reid sparked the inning with a leadoff triple on the very first pitch, and then scored after Valerie Arioto smacked a single to left field on the very first pitch she saw. Two batters later, Jamia Reid singled and stole second allowing Arioto to move to third base. Then Leomiti stepped to the plate and clocked a home run over the center field wall to push the lead to 6-0.
Cal kept ups its offensive onslaught in the sixth with back-to-back RBI from Jamia Reid (sacrifice fly, Arioto scored) and Leomiti (single up the middle, Shannon Thomas scored) to increase Cal's lead to 8-0.
