Cougar Baseball Defeats South Dakota State
March 21, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State rapped out 13 hits and cruised to a 12-4 victory over South Dakota State in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.
Senior Jared Prince (1-1) gave up two runs on six hits in six innings to earn the victory for the Cougars (7-11). Senior Ross Humes and junior Seth Harvey combined to blank the Jackrabbits (4-13) over the final three frames.
'It's nice to see us swing the bat well,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'South Dakota State put some good swings on the ball in the first inning and we were able to answer. It has been good to be able to get a lot of guys in the game over the last couple of days.'
After South Dakota State scored a run in the top of the first, Washington State tallied three in its half of the inning. Senior Greg Lagreid singled home two runs and sophomore Matt Argyropoulos delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Cougars on top 3-1.
The Jackrabbits pushed across a run in the third, but Jones answered with his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame that increased the Cougars' lead to 5-2.
WSU put the game away with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. In the fourth, senior Alex Burg knocked in a pair with a triple and scored on a ground out by Lagreid. In the fifth, sophomore John Desmarais drove in a run with a single, redshirt-sophomore Cody Bartlett tripled and freshman Patrick Claussen singled to make the score 11-2.
South Dakota State picked up a couple of runs in the seventh before Bartlett scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning to cap the scoring.
The teams conclude their three-game series, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
