Mandi Rodriguez Earns Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year
March 21, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. – Oregon State’s Mandi Rodriguez was announced as the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year Saturday evening following the Pac-10 Championships.
The junior from Baldwin Park, Calif. was selected by the conference’s head coaches prior to the conference championship meet. Rodriguez becomes the third Oregon State gymnast to earn the award and the first since Chari Knight in 1994. Knight also won the award in 1992 and Joy Selig in 1991.
Rodriguez proved the coaches’ votes were deserved earning the Pac-10 championship title on vault (9.95) and tying for the first on the floor exercise (9.90). She finished the meet second in the all-around with a score of 39.500.
In 2009, Rodriguez has “hit” 45 of her 48 routines (94%) and has secured 24 individual titles on the season, which ranks fifth in single season history at OSU. Among her wins this year are 10 (out of 12 meets) on the vault, where she ranks No. 5 in the nation and nine on the floor, where she ranks No. 3 in the country. In addition, Rodriguez has five all-around titles and ranks No. 6 in the nation. Coming into the Saturday’s meet, Rodriguez ranked first in the conference on the floor exercise and in the all-around and second on the vault.
Rodriguez has now been recognized by the Pac-10 Conference on five occasions this season (the most in the conference) for her accomplishments on the competition floor, twice earning Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and twice earning Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week.
