Rodriguez, Mak, Kesler Earn Pac-10 Titles; Beavs Finish Second
March 21, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - The Oregon State gymnastics team finished second at the Pac-10 Championships for the second straight year and Mandi Rodriguez earned Pac-10 titles on vault and the floor exercise and Leslie Mak and Jen Kesler tied for the uneven bars title. The 10th-ranked Beavers nailed six routines on the uneven bars to overtake No. 3 Stanford in the final rotation.
With Stanford cruising through three events, Oregon State trailed No. 7 UCLA for second place by .125. But a pair of falls by the Cardinal opened the door and the Bruins and Beavers walked through to knock off the top-ranked team.
'I'm really proud of these women tonight,' head coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'They fought off a wobbly start to have a great meet. The floor team really got the momentum rolling and the vaulters were outstanding and then the bars group did a wonderful job to finish. This is a great performance as we head into the postseason.'
Opening the meet on their strongest event, the Beavers' fifth-ranked beam team struggled with a few wobbles in the early going. Rodriguez led OSU with a score of 9.85 with Jen Kesler and Laura-Ann Chong adding scores of 9.8.
Following their first bye of the night, the Beavers moved to the floor exercise where they righted the ship totaling a team score of 49.225. Scores of 9.8 from Kera Bolen and Jereme Bigelow were followed by Leslie Mak's career-best 9.875 and Jami Lanz's 9.85. Rodriguez absolutely nailed her routine sticking each of her landings to score a 9.9, a routine that proved to be unbeatable.
After their second bye, Oregon State rotated to the vault which posed several question marks. Last week as Missouri, two vaulters, Brooke Barclay (knee) and Whitney Watson (ankle), had suffered minor injuries forcing OSU coaches to consider other options. However, the 'regular' group proved ready for action during warm-ups and the lineup produced a season-high team score of 49.325. Four vaulters tallied career-high scores, including Stephanie McGregor (9.8), Barclay (9.85), Watson (9.875) and Rodriguez (9.95).
When the Beavers returned to the competition floor after yet another bye, Oregon State needed a score of 49.250 on the uneven bars to catch the Cardinal. Opening scores of 9.8 by Olivia Vivian and Rodriguez led to a 9.85 by Lanz and a 9.825 from Chong. Kesler and Mak finished the scoring with matching scores of 9.9 providing just enough to ease past Stanford.
NCAA Regional seedings will be announced Monday morning.
NOTE: At the conclusion of the meet, the annual Pac-10 Awards were announced with OSU's Mandi Rodriguez receiving Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year. UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa was named as the Freshman of the Year and Stanford Kristen Smyth received Coach of the Year.
