Santos Drives in Four as the Beavers Defeat Saint Mary's
March 21, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Adalberto Santos went four-for-five from the plate and fell a triple short of the cycle, while Greg Peavey and Josh Osich combined to hold Saint Mary's without an earned run as the Beavers rolled to a 12-3 victory on Saturday night at Goss Stadium.
'This was a solid effort tonight,' head coach Pat Casey said. 'Adalberto had a solid game offensively and has had a solid last two weeks of hitting. Greg had a good outing and we played well overall. We still have two games left this weekend and need to put in good performances before we open up Pac-10 play next weekend.'
Santos extended his team high hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fourth inning. He continued his day with a run scoring double in the following inning before coming to the plate in the sixth with two runners on and smashing his second home run of the weekend. At the end of the day, Santos had driven in four runs while scoring three.
Logan Boyd added to the attack with a two-for-three effort from the plate, driving in runners in the fifth and eighth innings. The two hits marked his first multi-hit game of the 2009 season. Logan Lotti made his mark on the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning, when he launched a run-scoring double down the right field line for his first extra-base hit and RBI of his Oregon State career.
All told the Beavers managed 11 hits and five walks off three Saint Mary's pitchers. Scott Schneider picked up the loss after allowing eight hits and 10 runs - four of which were earned.
Greg Peavey took the mound for the fourth time this season and did not allow an earned run in six innings of work. The Oregon State (11-5 overall) starter allowed just four hits, a season low, and struck out three while picking up his second win of the season. Josh Osich replaced Peavey on the mound in the seventh and finished the game, allowing just two St. Mary's hits and striking out four for his first collegiate save.
The Beavers had fallen behind 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth thanks to three unearned runs scored by Saint Mary's (13-9) in the top half of the inning. The Oregon State bats made sure the deficit did not last long as six of the first seven hitters that came to the plate scored. The inning was punctuated by back-to-back two-RBI doubles by Santos and Boyd that gave OSU a lead they would not relinquish.
The Beavers get back in action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. PT against Saint Mary's at Goss Stadium. The game can be heard live on the Beaver Sports Network and a full webcast is available on Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
