Big First Innings Leads Dawgs Over Oregon, 5-1

March 22, 2009

PORTLAND, Ore. - Washington scored four runs in the top of the first and Tyler Cheney threw six and two-thirds strong innings as the Huskies beat Oregon, 5-1, in both teams' final game of the Rose City Invitational at PGE Park.

Cheney (2-2), a senior from Richland, gave up eight hits (all singles) and one run, walking one and striking out five for the win. Washington (8-11) won its second game in a row and its third in four games with the Ducks this season. Oregon dropped to 9-11.

The Huskies jumped on Oregon starter Madison Boer in the top of the first. After Brendan Gardner-Young drew a walk to leadoff the game, Julien Pollard doubled to the gap in right-center, sending in a run. After a walk and a pair of outs, Aaron Russell's two-out double scored two more. Jake Rife followed with a single to plate Russell, giving the UW a 4-0 lead.

Boer knuckled down after the first, retiring the next 12 Huskies in order. The UW finally broke through for another run in the sixth when Rife's second two-out single of the day scored Kyle Conley.

Oregon didn't score until the bottom of the sixth when Curtis Raulinaitis led off with a single and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch, making it a 5-1 UW lead.

In the seventh, the Ducks loaded the bases with two outs, ending Cheney's outing, but freshman Aaron West came on and struck out pinch hitter Colby Sokol to end the threat. West picked up the save, his first.

Pierce Rankin saw his 17-game hitting streak come to and end while Pollard, a sophomore from Tacoma led the UW with three hits in four at bats.

Next up for the Dawgs is a two-game series vs. UC Irvine at Husky Ballpark. Tuesday's game starts at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday's first pitch is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. (NOTE: that time has been changed from the original 2:30 p.m. start). Next weekend, the Huskies open Pac-10 play with a three-game series at Stanford.
