Even-Par Bears Are 7th with 18 to Play at National Invitational

March 22, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. - The California men's golf team is 7th at the National Invitational Tournament with 18 holes to play, staying in the hunt on the heels of Eric Mina's two-round -2, good for a tie at 10th for individuals, and an even-par 144 from John Murphy.

Michael Jensen fired a first-round 68 and Stephen Hale had a 2-under 70 on his opening round, but winds scuttled play significantly over the second round of the day. New Mexico leads the event with two windproof rounds of 280-280 - 560 (-16).

Jensen had six birdies against two bogies to end round one before the conditions helped to pile 10 more shots on his second round, leaving him in 25th. Mina had better luck in the wind and was first into the clubhouse with a par-72 followed by a 2-under 70 to end his day. George Gandranata toughed out a 75 on his second round to improve on his first-round 76.

With the top-4 scores counting in each day's team total, Gandranata's first rounfd and Jensen's second did not figure into the final tally for the first round.

Play resumes with the final round tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com
