Women's Crew Takes Down Gonzaga
March 22, 2009
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - The Oregon State women's Varsity 8+ crew raced to their second victory of the spring season and the Beavers won four-of-five races in a dual regatta against Gonzaga on Saturday at Liberty Lake, Wash.
The races were moved from Gonzaga's home waters of Silver Lake due to adverse conditions. Liberty Lake provided the weather the two schools needed to race as they encountered nearly no wind and very sporadic rain. The V8+ took advantage of the conditions and put together a solid race to defeat Gonzaga by 6.36 seconds.
The first Novice 8+ crew found themselves in a tough battle with their rivals from Spokane. The two crews were bow-to-bow in the first 1000 meters; with Gonzaga takings a few narrow leads. OSU took over in the second half of the race pulling away from the Bulldogs and coming away with an 11.74 second win.
Oregon State's Second Varsity 8+ also put together a complete race, crossing the finish line two boat-lengths ahead of the Bulldog boat. Both of the Beavers Varsity 4+ crews also defeated the Gonzaga V4+, with the Oregon State `A' boat cruising to a 22 second win while the Beavers `B' crew fought off the Bulldogs to take second.
'Overall I thought the team did what they came here to do,' head coach Emily Ford said. 'They were ready to race and they handled the competition well.'
The Beavers will now take two weeks to prepare for the San Diego Crew Classic, held on April 4-5 on Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif. Log on to osubeavers.com for all your Beaver rowing news.
